Wallace taught for two years at Immaculate Heart College before taking up an appointment at GWU in 1970. President, Association for the Sociology of Religion, 1975; Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, 1994-1995; American Sociological Association Sociology of Religion Section, 1998.

Her areas of interest and scholarly publications are in theory, gender, and religion. Her scholarly research in the field of religion began with a Ph.D. dissertation on social determinants of change of religious affiliation. She has been coauthor with William D'Antonio, James Davidson, and Dean Hoge: American Catholic Laity in a Changing Church and Laity: American and Catholic (Sheed & Ward 1989, 1996). Her groundbreaking study of women pastors of Catholic churches, They Call Her Pastor (SUNY 1992), centered primarily on American Catholic parishes in rural or small town areas. A continuation of this study focused on women pastors in urban areas. Wallace has presented papers on the priest shortage as a major force for gender equality in the Catholic Church, democratic participation in the Roman Catholic Church, feminist spirituality in a Catholic context, legitimation rituals and role transition for women pastors, and women's roles in religion.
