CHALFANT, H. PAUL | ||||
(1929-1994) Professor of Sociology at Texas Tech University,
1974-1994, Chair 1974-1990; first Executive Officer of the Religious Research Association,
1991-1994; Ph.D., University of Notre Dame, 1970; M.Div., McCormick Theological Seminary,
1954; Presbyterian pastor prior to graduate work in sociology. Chalfant's scholarly publications are concentrated in the sociology of religion plus medical sociology and social problems, particularly poverty and alcoholism. He is well known for his sociology of religion textbook, Religion in Contemporary Society (with Robert Beckley and Eddie Palmer, third edition, Peacock 1994) and for numerous regional, national, and international professional association activities, including presidency of the Mid-South Sociological Association (1977-1978) and the Southwestern Sociological Association (1991-1992) and membership on the Association for the Sociology of Religion Executive Council.
