FRIESS, HORACE L. | ||||
(1900-1975) Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University,
where with H. Richard Niebuhr and Paul Tillich, Friess helped develop the
University's graduate program in religion and the establishment of its
Department of Religion. He was Chairman of that Department from 1962 to
1964. Friess also served as Editor of the Review of Religion from
1942 to 1958 and was a prominent member and leader of the New York Society
for Ethical Culture. Active in the Society for the Scientific Study of
Religion, he served as its President in 1962-1963 and was a member of the
committee that brought about the establishment of the society's journal.
