HELLER, CELIA STOPNICKA | ||||
(1927-) Born in Poland, received a B.A. from Brooklyn College
(1950), M.A. (1952) and Ph.D. from Columbia University (1962), and rose from the rank of
Assistant Professor (1964) to Professor (1971) at Hunter College, CUNY. President,
Association of the Social Scientific Study of Jewry, 1977-1979. Her major work in the sociology of religion is On the Edge of Destruction: Jews in Poland Between the Two World Wars (Columbia University Press 1977), which has been twice reprinted. In addition, she has written on the attitudes of African Americans toward Jews and contributed to Commonweal and Commentary . J. Alan Winter |
