KALLEN, HORACE MEYER | ||||
(1882-1974) Philosopher-educator. One of the original core faculty of the New School for Social Research in New York City, where he was Professor of Social Philosophy. Prominent in Zionism and various liberal movements, Kallen was the author of some 30 books, among them Art and Freedom (Greenwood 1969 [1942]) and The Education of Free Men (Farrar Strauss 1949). He was an early member of the Council of the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion and its President in 1955-1956. He was instrumental in obtaining the grant from the J. A. Kaplan Foundation that enabled the establishment of the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion . Charles Y. Glock |
